Misson of Nombre de Dios
This past Wednesday we went back to St Augustine and went to the Mission of Nombre de Dios grounds. It is such a beautiful and peaceful place. It has a lot of history as the first parish Mass, 55 years before the pilgrims came. The founder of St Augustine was also the founder of Nombre de Dios Mission. The first shrine to Mary Mother of Jesus was also erected on this land. Even though I am not Catholic is was still very spiritual feeling.
This is the Great Cross (erected in 1963 to celebrate St Augustine's 400th Birthday) and statue of Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales who celebrated the first Mass.
We had the joy of watching a dolphin play in the Mantanzas River which is right behind the Great Cross. It was a sight to see!!
The grounds were so pretty
Our Lady of La Leche Church. They were actually holding a service in there but I didn't feel right about attending so we listened outside. This is actually the fourth chapel. The first was in 1615 this one was in 1918. The others fell victim to storms, wars, and pirates.
A statue of Jesus.
There were tomb stones everywhere as this is a cemetery as well. This below is of the Nuns that came after the Civil War to teach slaves.
Unfortunately we were not able to go into the museum. It was closed when we arrived. I would love to go back and see the museum.
